Debby被派到觀光景點擔任販售人員。某天,一位外國人跟她說:Could you ring it up for me? 她看對方拿著商品,直覺是想結帳,但為什麼要她打電話(ring up)?春節將至,若你是觀光景點或百貨商場銷售人員,以下這3句千萬要聽懂。

1. Could you ring it up for me?

(錯誤)可以幫我打電話嗎? (正確)可以幫我結帳嗎?

解析:ring up是打電話,ring it up卻是結算之意。這個片語由來,是按下收銀機開關鍵時都會發出「叮/噹」聲,由此衍生出結帳之意。

例句:I don't know where I can pay for this. Could you ring it up for me?

(我不知道上哪兒付錢,你可以幫我結帳嗎?)How much do I put down?

(錯誤)我放下多少? (正確)頭期款多少?

解析:put down原意確實是放下、寫下,不過若上、下文涉及買寅、交易之意,down是指「立即付款」。所以這整句話,就是買家在問頭期款的金額。

例句:I'd like to buy this on the installment plan. How much do I put down?

(我想要分期付款買下這個。頭期款該付多少?)Can you break this?

(錯誤)你能打破這樣東西嗎? (正確)你找得開這張大鈔嗎?

解析:break在此仍是打破之意,不過,真實情境中,若顧客對著你手持大鈔,可不是要求你真的打破它,而是想請你找開,也幫他換成零錢。

例句:Sorry, I don't have anything smaller. Can you break this?
